The ultimate (free) “sensory bin”! We love a good sand pit, especially in the Spring and Summer! Leave a bag of sand toys in your car & be ready to play.
Here are some of our favorites, and just a note, some are actually volleyball courts that kids use as sandpits (but that just means they’re bigger!)

Ashland
𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤
- 1112 Maple St, Ashland
- This playground has a sandpit, playground, swings, basketball court, and a public pool with a slide!
- It’s great for little ones with baby swings, a ramped playground, and a restroom close by
𝐏𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤
- 601 England St, Ashland
- This sandpit is smaller, but also next to a skate park & by all of the climbing structures
- The Ashland Library & downtown Ashland train tracks is a few blocks (0.5 miles) away
- For more on Pufferbelly Park, see my review here.

Hanover
𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝗪𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞
- 8225 Hanover Wayside Rd, Hanover
- This “sandpit” is a volleyball court, but right next to the playground. We love that it gets a lot of shade in the afternoons
- Check out my review of Hanover Wayside here.
Pole Green Park
- 8996 Pole Green Park Ln, Mechanicsville
- Another sand volleyball court, but it’s big and located right next to the playground!
- Click here for more information on Pole Green Park

Henrico
Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens
- 1800 Lakeside Ave, Henrico
- The Children’s Garden at Lewis Ginter offers SO much to do: a sandpit (that sees great shade in the afternoons), play houses, a tree house, rope swings, monkey bars, a climbing tree, and more. There’s also a Children’s Library
- You can choose daily admission to the garden or choose a membership which is worth it if you plan to visit 3 or more times in one year
- For more info on the Lewis Ginter Children’s Garden, click here.
Twin Hickory Park
- 5011 Twin Hickory Rd, Glen Allen
- The “sandpit” here is also a volleyball court! This one has a great playground though and one of the best splash pads for little ones in the summertime

Midlothian/Chesterfield
Rockwood Park
- 3401 Courthouse Rd, Richmond
- This “sandpit” is also actually a volleyball court! The playground here has one of the few “mommy and me” tandem swings
Wishing Well Park
- 2341 Winterfield Rd, Midlothian
- This is one of the best playgrounds for little ones in town! It is newly updated and COMPLETELY fenced in! This sandpit has tons of toys in it ready to be played with!
- For more on Wishing Well Park, see my review here.
Richmond
Lombardy & Park Ave Triangle
- 347 N Lombardy St, Richmond
- This playground and park is great for little ones, with trees all around and play equipment (including sand toys) to be pla with!
Huguenot Park
- 10901 Robious Rd, Richmond
- This playground is also fenced in and newly updated!
All Saints Church
- 8787 River Rd, Richmond
- Definitely one of the best sandpits and so perfect for little ones! The playground is completely fenced in, and it has TONS of shade
- Catch a Miss Anne’s Music & Movement class & then go play here! The playground is open when All Saints Preschool isn’t in session
